  • Deforestation in the North?!

    Etiketter: Forestry
A recent EPI (Environmental Performance Index) report from the Yale University ranks countries according to the ecosystem vitality of their forests which was estimated based on the change in tree cover between the years 2000 and 2012. Countries get ranked according to a scoring system. The best score is 100 (countries where tree cover was not reduced). The worst is 0. The Nordic and Baltic countries scored as follows: Denmark 19; Estonia 9; Finland 12; Latvia 3; Lithuania 24; Norway 32; Sweden 14. Iceland got no score. The other high latitude countries are Canada (score 17) and Russia (score 35). Thus, the message from EPI seems to be that there is deforestation and unsustainable forestry in the north! / NBforest.info

  • VTT: Textile waste can be made into fabrics that are even better than the original

    Etiketter: Forest research and education
The dissolving of textile waste offers the opportunity to return large volumes of waste to textile production. Novel and efficient methods will be able to recover cellulose molecules, providing one way of resolving the limitations soon to be placed on the use of landfill sites. Such methods will also serve to promote the efficient use of materials. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is currently developing methods for handling large quantities of textile waste material. / VTT

Every story has a history and Forest Refine is only a two year chapter in a ten year cross border cooperation between partners in Sweden and Finland. However there is no plan today to end the cooperation between countries that are front runners in knowledge about forestry. The situation in the printing and writing paper segment continues to be especially difficult due to overcapacity across the European paper sector,” says Timo Jaatinen, Director General of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation. / FFI
